Rayleigh waves with impedance boundary condition: Formula for the velocity, existence and uniqueness   The propagation of Rayleigh waves in an isotropic elastic half-space with impedance boundary conditions was investigated recently by Godoy et al. [Wave Motion 49 (2012), 585-594]. The authors have proved the existence and uniqueness of the wave. However, they were not successful in obtaining an analytical exact formula for the wave velocity. The main purpose of this paper is to find such a formula. By using the complex function method, an analytical exact formula for the velocity of Rayleigh waves has been derived. Furthermore, from the obtained formula, the existence and uniqueness of the wave has been established easily. (C) 2016 Elsevier Masson SAS. Analysis and control of FGM plates integrated with piezoelectric sensors and actuators using cell-based smoothed discrete shear gap method (CS-DSG3)   A cell-based smoothed discrete shear gap method (CS-DSG3) based on the first-order shear deformation theory was recently proposed for static and dynamics analyses of Mindlin plates. In this paper, the CS-DSG3 is extended for analysis and active vibration control of the functionally graded material (FGM) plates integrated with piezoelectric sensors and actuators. In the piezoelectric FGM plates, the properties of core material are assumed to be graded through the thickness by the power law distribution while the electric potential is assumed to be a linear function through the thickness of each piezoelectric sub-layer. A closed-loop control algorithm based on the displacement and velocity feedbacks is used to control static deflection and active vibration of piezoelectric FGM plates. Thermophilic fermentative hydrogen production from xylose by Thermotoga neapolitana DSM  4359 Biohydrogen production from xylose by Thermotoga neapolitana was investigated in batch culture using serum bottles and a continuously stirred anaerobic bioreactor (CSABR). The effect of various xylose concentrations on growth and H2 production were studied in small batch culture for highly efficient H2 production. The highest hydrogen production of 32.1 ± 1.6 mmol-H2/L and maximum biomass concentration of 959.63 ± 47.9 mg/L were obtained at initial xylose concentration of 5.0 g/L. To develop a large-scale biohydrogen production system as well as overcome the problems in small batch culture, a continuously stirred anaerobic bioreactor was tested on T. neapolitana in both pH-uncontrolled batch culture and pH-controlled batch culture.
